Google X Biodesign Challenge

2021 | www.biodesignsprint.org

“The Biodesign Sprint offers anyone with the spark of an idea the opportunity to explore sustainable solutions for technology-based hardware using biology and biotechnology.  With a month to develop projects, Sprint participants will gain experience in lightning-fast ideation and product development. Meanwhile, companies—like Google—can identify and collaborate on novel ideas in biodesign.”

Collaborators: Isabel Liang, Sabrina Tian, Walker Spalek, Sonia Shah, Kunal Abichandani, Brynn Lilley

BioBox

BioBox is a DIY kit aimed at middle and high schoolers, allowing them to take their first steps within biodesign by experimenting with bioplastics and biopaints, starting with the customization of their own biodegradable Pixel case.

The BioBox includes bioplastic filament to 3D print the base of the Pixel case, basic ingredients to mix the starter biopaints, bioplastic paintbrushes, paint pots, and a recipe book to inspire and guide further experimentation.

We want to push Google’s hardware products to empower students through hands-on experimentation and teach them how these innovations and biosolutions come to fruition. We want to change how younger generations approach creativity and express their individuality by creating personalized objects from bioplastics and biopaints and inspire them to use these practices in other areas.
